week 6 experience

week 6 experience

http://tep.uoregon.edu/resources/index.html  is the link we are provided by our instructor. I am interested in this page especially it has drawn my attention to conduct activities in engaging my students. I have already described my class in terms of students' number, It is the most suitable page for me which offers a wide range of materials.
What I learned in this week is in brief here:
Engaging students
·          It helps the teachers gain skills to manage their large classes. some important skills I have learned are " engaging students in large class" The teachers can engage the students in various way such as building a relationship with audience, bringing changes in writing style, interactions, creating deeper Understanding (using Classroom Assessment Techniques),team learning using small groups in large lasses and leading discussion in the class.

·         Other way to manage class is an effective management of the classroom. The teachers should call the students by their names. Teachers must be attentive to address the needs of students. Here I learned how to handle the difficulties that may appear in the classroom. Establishing classroom etiquette is recommended. Effective Presentations in Lecturing play a vital role in learning.
Using Technology
·         The students in my school are lacking in technological knowledge but they are curious about them. The main issues are lack of computers, electricity cut downs, and problem in the internet.
·         I learned many new things related to teaching with technology. Blog is one of the best things. Creating a blog for the students is another great idea. Blogs are easy to create and   they will be more useful if we organize resources to give the students tasks. Using a blog provides a wide range of possibilities. Blogs motivate the students. Unfortunately, the teaching system in our place, are depended upon chalk and talk .Students use textbook, pens, pencils, and their exercise books. No computers, no internet, can be used for them.
·         I take recorded material occasionally in audio form with the help of sound box and conduct listening speaking exercises.
·          I'm glad to find out impressive Webquests and their ability to encourage higher level thinking.  Webquest is an excellent technology to develop creative thinking.
Interactive Classes or PowerPoint:-
  • The idea of using power point is great. It is useful to teach listening, speaking, reading and writing, the students are easily attracted by colors and images. Therefore creating power point presentation really motivates the students. They really add "power" in learning because they are interactive by sounds and animations. Through the power point, we can teach grammatical structures, new vocabulary and comprehension of passages and so on.

·         The teacher can make his pupils talk more, share ideas each other, learn from each other and get involved in learning. They feel more secure and use English to communicate In large classes the teachers improve Lectures With Technology. Course Websites like we are using can be made and learning becomes efficient.

Implement the change

Hi Friends,
we are now in the 6th week of "Building Teaching Skills Through Interactive Web ( Web skills) Fall 2013, e-teacher training . I have generally reflected my weekly experiences through my blog which is a part of our training program. Almost all the participants around the world  are actively sharing our experiences. The training has focused mainly in learning English language with the help of technology either for the language instructors or the language learners. It is proved that the invention and use of recent technology has become a part of teaching and learning . These technologies address the demand of 21st century learning ,new learning style and new evaluation system . By the use of technology, a learner becomes free and gets autonomous environment to study .
My concern about  teaching was to manage the large classes by which many schools in our country Nepal  are not able to promote the quality  education. The students number is quite large and often uncontrolled by the teachers in terms that checking the student's homework, giving them feedback, encouraging for study. We had Teacher's Professional  Development (TPD ) module training in our training center 3 years ago and I had collected some idea to find the technique on the websites.
This training has been a milestone for my career , even all the skills I have learned in  this training can't be applied in my classroom due to the access of technology. Teaching a large class effectively is hard work.
"it's possible to do it even if you're not a big-league entertainer. If you make the necessary logistical arrangements far enough in advance, provide plenty of active learning experiences in the classroom instead of relying on straight lecturing, and take full advantage of the power of teams in both in-class and out-of-class work, large classes can come close to being as educationally rewarding as small classes. The instructor's satisfaction may be even greater in the large classes: after all, many professors can teach 15 students effectively, but when you do it with 100 or more you know you've really accomplished something."  source : http://www4.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/users/f/felder/public/Papers/Largeclasses.htm

The other site http://www.cmu.edu/teaching/designteach/index.html , I found a massive store of resources related to technology and education. The ideas associated in the sites construct a bulky volume while printing and costs hundreds of dollars to buy. But we can get free knowledge from here. Some topics are as follow
Tools to support collaboration:

·         Communication

·         Virtual Meetings

·         Email

·         Instant Messaging

·         Screen Sharing

·         Blogs

·         Voice, Video, Web Conferencing

·         Discussion Boards

·         Team Definition & Participants

·         Social Networking

·         Presence Management

·         User Profiles

·         Contact Management

·         Project Management

I am using the following methods to manage the large classes. Some techniques are new and to be applied and some I used to apply.

Collaborative Grouping

Train all the pupils how to lead a group.

APPLE Method

Small group discussions

Questionnaires

Train pupils how to routinise classroom chores

Involve  students.

Know r students – match names with faces

Conduct interactive “getting to know” activities

Allow students to express themselves

Encourage questions and comments

Establish reasonable rules for student behavior

Besides these techniques, using printed webquest and rubrics has brought good result. I applied my webquest on" Planning a Trip" in my classroom . The students worked in groups and made a good plan. They were motivated to work but some of the students were not so active because they seem to depend other members  in their group.

Another task was to create interactive powerpoint. I have working knowledge of powerpoint for specific purposes. I can make interactive slides and no doubt, power point slides create motivating environment in large classes. I have shared a presentation  for quiz and teach  a story in this link : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9EA8Fp9zVKRUGpuNzF2eDd0Skk/edit?usp=sharing.
I can use this in small groups taking the students in computer room

Week 5 experiences

The topics  for this week were:
·         Project based Learning, WebQuest ,
·         Rubrics and Alternative Assessment
·        Project Task 4
·         Extra Credit Task - Project-based learning and WebQuests
======================= =========== ==============
·         Our usual discussion took place on "Alternative Assessment". we read the site for this http://www.nclrc.org/essentials/assessing/alternative.htm and knew that It is conducted in learner-centered classrooms because they are  based on the idea that students can evaluate their own learning and learn from the evaluation process. Assessment is based on authentic tasks that demonstrate learners' ability. Focus on communication, not on right and wrong answers Learners have opportunities to assess themselves and their peers.

·         Knew how PBL could affect student motivation and behavior in class, Students work on their own pace, in individual or group with technology. I knew to apply Project based Learning by preparing WebQuest of our own and taking help from the webquest available on http://www.webquest.org/search/index.php and http://zunal.com/zunal-help/help-about-whatiswebquest.php  We discussed on the Nicenet with our posts and comments each other.

·        After reading about rubrics on Rubistar I knew the new and most acceptable and believable tools for assessing the student's performance. Rubrics guide the teacher and award impartial marks to the students. They find out their weakness themselves and make correction.

·        shared a rubric for a lesson (my rubric on Telling story) can be found on http://rubistar.4teachers.org/index.php?screen=ShowRubric&module=Rubistar&rubric_id=2376389&  or on the course wiki. My view on rubrics is scientific learning and scientific evaluation.

Week 5 summing up

·        After reading the websites we were given to,I started creating post on Nicenet. My first and second both posts were about Rubric, Assessments, and PBL
·        Next I Created a Rubric or Alternative Assessment Tool
·        I have created and uploaded my rubric On our class wiki on telling a story. My rubric is for the secondary level students here in Nepal. I made this with Rubistar. I have shared my link above.
·        The next task was PROJECT STEP 4: Technology Related Change. I have posted possible technology solution  of my real class problems on nicenet. After completing the project, I will post this on my blog.
·         Next task in week 5 was to create EXTRA CREDIT Create a Webquest/Technology Enhanced Project . I created the webquest with rubrics and posted it on our class wiki.

Week 4 experiences

Discussion - Reading/Writing Skill-Building Websites
As usual task, I was busy in reading different websites . The websites were found and posted on the nicenet with the help of our course instructor and the participants. The week remained exciting to explore the websites related to reading, writing and vocabulary. We got the chance to be introduced with new instructor Andrea who instructed the participants to build our own websites. we explored her website and trying to make our own website. I will share my in coming days.
============== ============== ===================
I went through the reading article "Three Extensive Reading Activities for ESL/EFL Students Using E-books" by Mei-Ya Liang I found this link http://iteslj.org/Lessons/Liang-ExtensiveReading.html from our course for week 4.
This system of reading ( reading E-books) is a new technology in our country and I found this type of reading E- book is very useful, autonomous and it may have collected popularity many years ago in other part of the world because this journal dates 2004. We could hear people talking about E-book reading but experiencing nowadays .After 9 years, I came to know about the details of E- book readings when I started this training.
========== ============ =================
This week reminded us our previous week. we discussed about our class issue and described the issues that technology might be able to help in teaching and learning activities. We again, in this week tried making ABCD objectives. Another skill I have gained is using and sharing google documents for teaching and learning.
Other Task to us was Preparing a Technology-Enhanced Lesson Plan. After reading about technology-enhanced lesson plans we created a technology-enhanced lesson plan found that  it is  different from the regular lesson plan format .

Group Communication

My Dear friends,

we are so busy doing our work, even this busy scheduled hours, we can have some time to view each others blogs and delicious pages. Now I think we are doing our best but not collectively. I felt that there is communication gap among us because we are not connected each other. We just see the post on Nicenet, reply and so on. It would be better to know what we are doing now. That is possible if we follow each other on our blog, follow on delicious pages. I started following some of you and knew the activities about what you did. Isn't it good idea?
